Our approach is different from tutoring. Tutoring works on the content. We work on the foundations: the brain connections and processing skills a child needs to be able to learn. When those foundations are in place, everything else becomes possible.
Ruth knows what it feels like to sit in waiting rooms, drive long distances to appointments, and leave still searching for answers. She has two children of her own: one diagnosed with autism, an auditory processing disorder, and hearing difficulties; another who was an early reader but couldn’t write. As she navigated the rounds of specialists, Ruth kept asking the same question: why isn’t this working? And more importantly, what will?
Ruth wasn’t a teacher at the time. She was a dental hygienist and business owner, not someone with a career in education. But she was a parent who needed something better than what was available. She began working as a teacher’s aide, discovered she had a natural ability to connect with children who were finding school hard (what many called the “challenging” kids) and never looked back. She went on to complete a double degree in Special Education and Disability Studies, then a Masters in Educational Neuroscience, seeking out research-based programs across the globe that actually addressed the root causes of learning difficulty.
She discovered that tutoring doesn’t fix the root problem. If a child can’t process what they’re hearing, can’t hold information in their memory, or can’t coordinate the movements needed to write, no amount of tutoring will change that. You have to work on the foundations. And that’s exactly what Reading and Writing Solutions does.
Ruth brings everything she has learned as a parent and educator to the heart of Redcliffe. Her centre is built on compassion, on evidence, and on the belief that every child has potential that a teacher’s mark sheet can’t always see. If you’re looking for help, you’ve found the right place.
Tutoring assumes a child already has the tools to learn. We start by finding out why they’re struggling, and implement a program specifically built for them.
Our 20-week programs draw on research-based neuroscience principles to build life-long literacy.
Ruth went through this journey as a parent first. After success with her own children, she dedicated her career to helping other families. She knows all too well what it feels like to be in your shoes.
We work hard to make this center feel free from the pressures and anxieties children may associate with the classroom. Kids can be kids here – free from judgement, and parents are always welcome.
